Alabaster | Charles Edwards

Alabaster

Alabaster is a material of quiet luxury, prized for its luminous depth, velvety softness, and naturally expressive character. A form of gypsum with a microcrystalline structure, it possesses the distinctive translucency that has made it a cherished medium for centuries. Soft enough to be carved and polished with remarkable precision, alabaster has long been associated with sculpture, ornament, and the finest decorative arts.

Its use in England spans more than eight centuries, with alabaster appearing in architecture, ecclesiastical works, and objects of enduring refinement. Revered for its subtle radiance and organic beauty, it became an important part of the English decorative tradition. The names of our dish lights pay homage to those historic English mines, whose legacy continues to shape the story of the material, even though the mines themselves are now closed.

Unique Provenance

Today, we source all of our alabaster from a privately owned family mine with exclusive quarries in northern Spain, adhering to our ethical standards. Orders are cut from the same batch of rock extracted from a specific quarry. Each batch typically comprises several alabaster nodules of the same variety, offering a close degree of continuity in texture, colour, and overall character. For projects involving multiple dishes, we recommend placing the order as a single batch to achieve the greatest possible consistency between pieces.

Even within the same batch, however, alabaster remains a natural material and no two pieces are ever exactly alike. Variations in tone, veining, and translucency are inherent to the stone and should be expected as part of its beauty. These distinctions are not imperfections, but the signature of an authentic material shaped by nature over time.

Organic Variations

The blocks we select are chosen for their exceptional translucency, with a snow-white base and minimal marking. Tones may range from pristine white to warm ivory, soft cream, and, on occasion, subtle notes of amber or pale grey. Patterning may appear as delicate, misted pooling, fine feathered striations, or quiet ribboning within the stone, each contributing to the depth and individuality of the piece. We favour alabaster with the least dramatic veining, allowing its softness, light, and material presence to speak with restraint.

Natural changes in opacity are also part of the character. Areas of greater whiteness and areas of higher transparency reflect subtle microtextural variations within the stone itself. The whitest passages correspond to slightly larger gypsum microcrystals, while the more translucent areas are formed by finer crystals, creating the nuanced interplay of opacity and light for which alabaster is so admired.

Because these characteristics occur naturally, we cannot guarantee that the alabaster supplied will replicate a specific photograph, sample, prior order, or exact visual expectation. Each piece is selected with meticulous care for its quality and integrity, while preserving the singular character that defines this extraordinary stone.

Alabaster Care Guidelines

To preserve the natural beauty of your alabaster piece, gently wipe the surface with a damp, pure cotton cloth and carefully dab dry with a clean, pure cotton cloth. No abrasive cleaners should be used. If needed, a pH-neutral soap may be used sparingly.

Please refer to our Metal Finishes page for care instructions relating to the metal elements of your Alabaster Dish Light.

Alabaster Bulbs

As standard, we recommend a 4000K lamp for our Alabaster Dish Lights. Its cooler colour temperature enhances the depth, definition, and natural veining of the alabaster, revealing the stone’s character with greater clarity. Clients may, of course, opt for an alternative lamp colour temperature to achieve a different atmosphere, with warmer 2700K lamps lending a softer, more ambient quality to the light.

Chain Length Adjustment

Each Alabaster dish light is wired through one of the suspension chains, allowing the overall drop to be adjusted on site to suit your space.

Due to the chain design—alternating round and rectangular links—drop adjustments are determined by the link lengths. Round links are required at both connection points: the dish and the canopy.

Central Pendant Models: If your dish features a central pendant, please contact our showrooms or your account manager for tailored support.
